POLICE COURT NEWS.

A STREET BRAWL. ) 1 In consequence of the disturbance which ' took place in His Majesty's Arcade 011 , Saturday night, March 10, three young. • men, Harold Johnson, Claude Martin, and ! Cyril Martin (brothers) were charged before ' Messrs. R. 0. Hendy and D. Hewitt, • J.'sP., at the Police Court yesterday, with assaulting Alfred Vassal Cox, Ernest Adams, and Win. F. McMurray. Sub-In-spector Gordon prosecuted. Mr. C. J. Fair appeared for Johnson, and Mr. Hackett for the Martins. The evidence was to the effect that- the defendants attacked Cox, who is an old man. and that McMuiray and Adams interfered to protect him. The Bcnch considered that the whole trouble had been caused by horse-play on the part of the defendants. It was a question, not so much of what was done to Mr. Cox, but of protecting the public, so that they might walk along public places in decency and without seeing these rows. Taking into consideration that the defendants were respectable - men, convictions would not be recorded against them, since that would be very serious for them; but they would have to pay all the costs. The Bench commended Mr. Adams for his action, and expressed the opinion that lie was deserving of"'the thanks of the community for interfering to protect Mr. Cox. THE MOUNT EDEN SHOOTING SENSATION. On the application of Sub-Inspector Gordon. George Hassett, charged with attempting to minder Charles Hassett by shooting him with a pistol, was further' remanded for a week.
