WHY THE CALLIOPE ESCAPED
The following letters appeared in recent issues of the London Daily News: —
Sir,l was in charge of engineering works in Aden, when H.M.s. Calliope, on her .voyage Home alter the hurricane, put into that port for coal, and slight repairs to machinery. In a conversation I had with the chief engineer of the vessel before carrying out. the repairs, he gave me to understand that the safety of the vessel was due entirely to the excellence of the machinery.
It- was not so much the quality of coal at that time as the endurance of machinery, driven much over the limit, which brought the vessel safely through, for if the slightest thing had given out ail would have been lost.—Yours. etc.. W. H. Still. ex-Sur-veyor to Lloyd's Registry of British and Foreign Shipping.
Sir. J was in New Zealand at the time of the Calliope's grand achievement atSamoa. It was repeatedly asserted in the Auckland Herald, and not, as far as 1 am aware, denied, that the superior quality of the New Zealand coal had made all the difference in the result. —Yours, etc C. 1' Newcombk. 19. Elms Avenue. Muswcll Hill, N., January 11.
