THE AUCKLAND RAILWAYS.
PROPOSED GISBORNE AND STRATFORD CONNECTIONS. At a meeting held yesterday by the Aueklaud Railways League, at which the Auckland M.'s M.R. were invited to be present. the question was discussed as to the best, means of getting; the Auckland-Gisborne and Stratford-Ongarue lines pushed on with more speed. It was resolved to communicate with the Hon. J. Carroll (in whose electorate Gisborae is situated.) and ask hit advice, as to the procedure of the league. Messrs. Baume and Kidd, M.'s H.R., after hearing a verbal report from Mr. .las. Stewart. C.E., of the council of the league, as to the route to Gisborne, which ho explored some years ago, promised their hearty assistance in endeavouring during the coming session to obtain votes for both of these important public works. The question of sending a representative from Auckland to Gisborne and Stratford to stir up an agitation there was left for another meeting, to lie called by the council I in about a week's time, -as this is a finani cial question which will depend upon the ! support afforded to the league by the public. As to the route to be followed in constructing the Auckland-Gisborne railway, the Tauranga Council forwarded the following resolution, "That this Council is decidedly in favour of the continuation of the railway from Waihi, through Tauranga to jTo Puke, and down the East Coast." The ! Waihi Borough Council sent the following resolution, "That this Council desires to express its opinion in the most emphatic way that the route to bo followed should be via Waihi, Katikati, Tauranga, and on to Opotiki."
