ITS FINANCIAL PROSPECTS

(Received February 23, 10.28 p.m.)
Melbourne, February 23. Mr. Milward, chief electrician of the Pacific Cable Board, in an interview, says that roughly the Pacific Cable Board is getting about one-third of the business. If half were secured, the present loss would be turned into profit. He thinks there is no likelihood of a reduction in rates under existing conditions. About 95 per cent, of the messages are in code, each code word representing about four ordinary, so the sender pays only about ninepence & word. Speaking personally he does not think the pooling arrangements with the Eastern Extension Company will be arranged.
