TECHNICAL EDUCATION,
SCHOOLS FOR THE EMPIRE.
A GREAT SCHEME FOR
LONDON.
By Telegraph—rre»» Association—Copyright London, February 5. The final report of the Department*! Committee of the Royal College of Science recommends the establishing of a group of associated colleges of science and technology, where the highest specialised instruction shall be given and the fullest equipment be provided for the most advanced training in research.
These colleges would become the) chief technical schools of the Empire. The group would include a college of social science, a Royal school of mines, and a central technical college.
New departments are to be established at South Kensington. The Commissioners of the 1831 Exhibition are willing to grant an unoccupied portion of their estate if the Government will offer buildings at South Kensington, to be used as a college of science, and make an annual grant of £20,000, and the London County Council probably will make a similar annual contribution.
The co-operation of the University, the London County Council, and the City and Guilds Institute is practically secured, and Messrs. Weraher, Beit and Co.'s gift of £100,000 is available for buildings and initial equipment.
A governing body of forty members is recommended, one-fourth of them to be Government nominees. .
In an earlier report tho committee r»commended tho uniting of the Royal College of Science with London University. Sir Philip Magnus. Superintendent of tho Department of Technology. City and Guils Institute, predicted then that, if tho proposals of the committee wore adopted the now institution would bo superior to anyother in Europe or America.
