HIGH COMMISSIONER'S MARKET CABLEGRAM.

The following cable has been received by the Department of Industries and Commerce from the High Commissioner, dated London, February 3: — The mutton market is very unsettled, River Plate mutton being in large supply. Stocks of New Zealand mutton on hand are light. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton is 4£d per lb, light weights, of which there is a limited supply: 4d per lb hoaw weights; for other and North Island mutton old per lb. The lamb market is quiet, stocks on hand being heavy. The price of this season's New Zealand lamb is 5d (nominal). The average price of Australian lamb is 4d per lb. The beef market is very dull. The average price to-day tor hindquarters of New Zealand beef is 3*d per lb; fores, 2|d. Quotations for New Zealand beef are nominal. The butter market has collapsed, American, renovated and mixtures being in large supply, seriously affecting the market, which is weak. Holders are anxious to sell, but buyers are holding back, expecting prices to "go lower. Supplies will be moderate. The price of choicest New Zealand butter to-day is 105s per cwt: Danish, 114s. , The cheese market is quiet, prices being slightlv weaker. Transactions in cheese are very limited, New Zealand being quoted at 60s "per cwt. The hemp market is firm, light shipments being expected from Manila. The price of New Zealand hemp, " good, fair, "Wellington" grade, on spot, to-day, per ton is £33 10=; January to March shipments. £33; Manila hemp, "fair, current," grade, £42 10s, on spot. Buyers have been offering.for cocksfoot seed "more freely, and stocks on hand are light. The average price to-day for bright, clean New Zealand cocksfoot seed, weighing l?lb per bushel, is 54s per cwt. The wool sales closed with firm market and an upward tendency, prices being fully equal to the closing rates of last sale. The estimated values are: Fine crossbreds, all grades. Is Id to Is 3d per lb: medium crossbreds all grades. lOd to Is Id per lb; coarse crossbreds, all grades, 9£d to Is o£d per lb; superior merino. Is Id to Is 3£d per lb; medium, lOd to Is Id per lb; inferior, 8d to lC'id per lb.
