THE GOLDFIELDS.

WAIOTAHI,

2CWT OF PICKED STONE SELECTED.

I The manager of the Waiotahi mine reports having selected a further 2cwt of picked stone from the first stope above the No. 5 level. MAO.RILANDER. : BATTERY TO BE ERECTED. [BY TELEGRAPH.OWN CORIIESFO.VDKN C. ] Waihi, Wednesday. At a meeting of the Maorilander Gold Mining Syndicate last night, it was decided to proceed with the erection of a battery forthwith. Mr. J. M. Haslett was appointed supervisor, with instructions to proceed with the work as quickly as possible. The prospects of the mine are said to be veryencouraging. KURANUI-CALEDONIAN. [BY TELEGRAPH.-OWN* CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Wednesday. The manager of the Kuranui-Caledonian mine has accepted the tender of R. Richards and party for sinking the winze 011 the Waiotahi boundary to intersect the underlie of the No. 5 Cure reef, at 19s 6d per foot, and a start was made'with the work this morning. It is also intended to sink a winze on the Cambria reef in the face of the eastern drive, at the point where the improved mineral came in at the bottom of the drive, and preparations are now under way for this work, which will lie commenced as soon as possible. WAIHI BEACH. The manager of the Waihi Beach mine sent the following telegram to the secretary (Mr. H. J. Lee) yesterday:—"Solid quartz in face of drive." This refers to the lowlevel drive (355 ft), at which the manager, in the course of his last weekly report, stated that on the south side of the leader, cut in the face of the drive, the quartz was split up, and there was a good deal of mullock through it. He has evidently passed through the mullock, and got into solid quartz again. OMAHU MINES. ■ Mr. McDonald, chairman of directors of the Omabu Mines, Limited, Company, accompanied by the supervisor (Mr. M. Fleming) and secretary (.Mr. Stevenson), paid a visit of inspection to the company's property a day or two ago. After inspecting the battery, which consists of five head of stamps, with provision for an additional five head, if necessary, and other machinery, the party inspected the mine, which is connected with the battery by an aerial tram, about half-a-mile long. At the No. 1 level, which has been driven on the reef for a distance of 50ft, the ore body in the face was found to be about sft in thickness. A dish of dirt taken from this, and one from the old prospector's drive, which the No. 1 level intersects, were washed in the creek, and are said to have given excellent prospects. A visit was then made to several shafts, sunk on the lino of reef by the original owners of the property, and the inspection satisfied the visitors that there were some thousands of tons of ore available in these parts. The "We Three ' section of the mine was then visited, and the reef, which has been proved for a distance of 150 ft, was found to average about ISin in thickness. Trial samples of general dirt from this reef, which outcrops alongside the pressure box, at the back of the battery, about 1000 ft away, have' yielded payable results. The party state that they were well pleased both with the prospects of the mine and the forward state of the plant, and anticipate that a start will be made with crushing operations early next month.

WAIHI WARDEN'S COURT. [BY TELEGRAm OWN CO I? II PEST.] Waiiii, Wednesday. At the Warden's Court to-day the following applications were granted :—Special claim, John Kelly, Waihi Monument; Waihi Consols Gold Minim Company, for protection of the Waihi North; J. Thomas, for protection of the Waihi Discovery, Waihi Reach; E. B. Walker, for protection of the Bullion special claim; G. Rothvell and W. Walker, for surrender of sections 328 and 327 respectively, accepted ; Waihi Grand .Junction Company, for sections 3<JB and 327 ; Waihi Gold Mining Company, special site of one acrc. T. Johns, for residence site 274, Waihi : Mr. Moss, on behalf of the previous owner, objected to the application. Mr. Jackson, who appeared for Johns, objected to Mr. Moss appearing. Mr. Moss said the objection was on public grounds. He wished to draw the Court's attention to what might or might not, be an abuse by mining: companies. The position was that the urouertv was tra»»fc''red to

the Grand Junction, the company's agent first warning' the owner that it was going to be resumed by the company for mining purposes. Mr. Jackson pointed out that the Grand Junction Company had paid Withcrow £50, and at the same time given him the right to remove the two chanties on the sections.. Withcrow still had the right to remove the shanties. Mr. Moss asked now that the company did not want the section for mining purposes if Witherow, who had sold it to the Grand Junction for half its value under what, might he termed pressure, could not have the offer of buying it back again? The Warden said he did not see how he could interfere with a private transaction. The transfer had been made by the owner with his eyes open. He had taken fche business into his own hands, and it was too late now to come to the Court for adjustment. How could any Court in the face of a transfer deal, with such an objection? After some further argument the application was granted. J. <V. Walker, protection of Walker's Waihi Gigantic Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 special quartz claims to continue working with eight men for three months: Mr. Jackson, who appeared foi the applicant, pointed out that already a sum of upwards of £500 had been expanded on the property, over £400 being spent in wages and material. ' Vanguard (January 22): The low level crosscut is now in 180 ft, making n total from the shaft of 1491 ft. Two additional men have been put on to push the crosscut ahead as quickly as possible, and as the result of a consultation with Mr. E. F. Adams, surveyor. I should say th.ic tlye distance required to meet the Vanguard and Bird-in-Hand lodes will most likely be driven during the next, three weeks. The country continues good for meeting with gold-bearing reefs and for speedy progress. New Una (January 23): A further distance of 22ft. has been driven. The kindly sandstone continues, and the flinty, now more strongly in evidence than for sonic time, contains a larger percentage of silica than previously. Wherever it makes quartz colours of gold are continuously seen. According to survey, another 34ft of driving should cut the reef, provided it keeps its coutae as indicated on the surface.
