OPENING OF HOKITIKA-ROSS RAILWAY. [BY TELEGRAPH.— I'KESS ASSOCIATION.] Hokitika, Monday. Tin; ceremony of opening the first section of the Hokitika-Ross railway was performed this afternoon by the Premier and the Minister for Lairds, there being over 4000 people present. In die evening Mr. Seddon and Mr. Duncan were entertained at a public banquet. The Premier, in his speech, dwelt largely on local subjects, referring to Hokittka as one of the soundest financial towns in the colony, the returns of the Government. Savings Ranks having a larger percentage of deposits than any other town of a similar size. He strongly advised local people to go in foi more substantial improvements, especially first-class hotel accommodation, to attract more tourist traffic to view West land's scenic wonders. He predicted that ere long thousands of visitors will find their way to Westland, and he would ask the Tourist Department to provide better facilities. In order to develop the immense natural resources of We-stland, it was necessary to co-operate with Otago to extend the railway from Hokitika through South Westland to connect with the Otago Central railway.
