THE CRY OF THE CHILDREN.
Sir,— appeal for help on behalf of the poor and needy made through the .columns of the press by the various organisations of the-- city, whose noble and Christ-like mission it is to strive to ameliorate the condition of those whoso lives have been blighted by poverty and misfortune, is surely deserving of a substantial and liberal response. Especially does the plaintive cry of the children appeal to the benevolent at this glad season of the year, when all hearts respond to the Christmas greetings of friend and foe alike. " Inasmuch a? yo have done it to the least of those, ye have done it unto Me," are the pregnant words of the,Divino Master, -whose merciful mission it was to help and to save the poor and the needy. Better far one brief hour to help to brighten the lives of some of these innocent little mites than a lifetime to 101 l in the gilded lap of luxury and ease. To those who devote themselves to this noble and self-denying workfinding their highest and best reward in the approving testimony of a good conscience—too much praise cannot be accorded. " What souls possess themselves so pure, or is there blessedness like theirs?" ■ Those of our citizens who possess the means and are inclined to help will, it is to bo hoped, as in past years, exercise their accustomed liberality.
