THE GOLDFIELDS.

NEW MAY QUEEN.

GOLD IN LOW LEVEL BEEP.

The secretary of,the New May Queen Mining Company (Mr." J. W. Nichol) received the following- telegram from the mine : superintendent (Mr. H. H. Adams) yesterday:" Started breaking down reef in low level; strong dabs gold showing." This refers to the No. 4 lode at N0.:6 level, .-and the manager of the mine, in a I report received in town yesterday forenoon, says:'— I am pleased ,o say that | the lode is to hand at last. We are stripping it at present. Judging by the favourable '-indications and country- encasing it I shall be very much disappointed if picked stone is not got when breaking it down." Shortly before four, o'clock yesterday afternoon the following telegram was received from the mine manager:—"Broken down lode, No. 6 level. Quartz showed ' good dabs of gold freely. Lode looking well." [BY TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Wednesday. The breaking down of the portion of the lode .stripped in the low • level of the New May Queen mine took place this morning with very favourable results, as the lode here looks quite as well as it did at the bottom of the winze. Good blotches of gold were freely distributed through the quartz. The lode is about 18in in thickness, and the gold is distributed through the solid quartz. with coarse bright mineral and silica. The lode is encased in first-class country on both walls, favourable for gold and good progress. The drive on the lode is now being continued, both from the crosscut and the bottom of the winze, and no further breaking down will take place until the connection is made between, the two drives. This work will require another 20ft of driving, and will take until about the end of the week. The prospects of this mine are now very good, and there is no doubt whatever that the block opened up between the Nos. 6 and 5 levels is a valuable one, and will amply repay the shareholders for the development work done. A parcel of eight loads of quartz, being the balance broken from' the bottom of the winze since. last crushing, is now being put through the battery, together with 201b of picked stone, and will be completed about the end of the week. ■■'

, ' WAIHI EXTENDED. REEF STRIPPED FOR NINE FEET. The manager of the Waihi Extended mine telegraphed as follows yesterday forenoon : —"Reef stripped 9ft. It has every appearance of being the No. 1, and a. good lode." The lode referred to is the ore body recently met with in the No. 2 crosscut. ''~...

[BY TEUSGILWH OWN" CORKESrONDKXT.] ,:■..■ Waihi, Wednesday. : A good deal of interest is being taken in tie. developments in the Waihi Extended mine, -and it is generally considered that the reef cut is the Grand! Junction No. 1 lode:••' It is said that the manager lias received 1 instructions from Auckland to break down the lode, iu order to satisfy the public.

WAIOTAHI.

VISITED BY THE GOVERNOR.

. The visit of His Excellency the Governor to the Waiotahi mine yesterday was not a superficial one. - LordPlunket and staff donned miners' clothes, and descended the shaft in the cage to the lowest level and made a thorough inspection of the workings. The .party was accompanied by the manager (Mr. , Warae) ; and ..the. Herald representative. The manager explained, and pointed out the ' principal features of the mine. r After returning to the surface, the battery was visited,. and the process of treatment of the ore and amalgamation was explained, some amalgam being squeezed in His Excellency's presence. Lord Plunket expressed himself very pleased with all he had .seen.

HARDY'S MINES, LIMITED.

Negotiations are about to be entered into ■with a view to raising further capital for the more extensive development of Hardy's Mines (Waiorongomai). In the Colonist section of the mine, a trial crushing of 32 tons of dirt taken from the floor of the drive ■ was recently made, and gave a nett return of £3 15s per ton. With a view to following down this run of ore, the company are now arranging for increased capital. In the Premier section of the mine work is being :pushed ahead in the No. 4 level to cut the ■lode which yielded good returns in the upper levels. * During the first few months of 1905 the company will reduce the number of hands employed, and will again increase the workers as the developments progress. The battery in the meantime will be closed down, except for crushing of small "parcels. ...<■ . -■

KIRIKIRI.

The manager of the Kirikiri mine telegraphed yesterday as follows:—"Crushed and treated one ton of ore from low level, Horse Slice section, for, a. return of soz of gold, valued at £13 10s.''

NEW OCCIDENTAL.

: . At the office of the secretary (Mr. H. J. Lee) of the New Occidental Gold Mining Company yesterday,-several pieces of quartz.broken from the drive off the main level at the mine were on view. Fine gold was-seen in some of the stone,"' and .the quart* generally carried favourable mineral : indications. ■:•' "'"

MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. , : ; New Una (December 13): Good progress in being made with'the main crosscut, and the country rock is of the best description. Small quartz veins, in which colours of gold are seen, are fre!.fluently pawed through.' The flinty is still in the drive, and makes bunches of quartz at times, . from which small rich specimens are procured. I am hopeful that good results will be met with 'when'the junction of the reef with the flinty is i'intersected. ' ... . Mahara Royal (December 16) Operations have ■been confined during the week to extending the leading slope north from the main rise on the. I Royal reef above the intermediate, level and coni tinning 'the back stopes. The lode varies in size ;to 6ft trt thickness, and gold was seen more i]freely in the ore sent to the battery. : < Rising Sun: During the- week the 'extension ■ '.61 the northern drive has been continued. No quartz has been broken. We have about 10ft 'stripped, which I will have broken towards the ■end of the week. ■ About 30l't back from the -.face a leader 3in thick crossed the drive at right !■ angles. lam under the impression that it carried a portion of the reef into the foptwall. I am driving a few feet on it to see if my surmise is correct. ■■-'-.-:-. .;■■: _, . -
