AUSTRALIA AND IMMIGRATION.
DAILY MAIL VERSUS MR,
COGHLAN.
LABOUR DOMINATION SHOULD
CEASE.
By Tclepraph.—Press Association.— London, December 19. The Daily Mail says that Mr. Coghlan, far from apologising or confessing that,, lie is in the wrong, pretends in !(a second letter that his charge was different, and flics off at a tangent to raise irrelevant questions. He had already been cautioned as to his too favourable report on'the prospects for immigrants, and his Government would act wisely 'in further cautioning him against bringing unfounded charges and in directing him to apologise for his excess of zeal.
Mr. Coghlan in his letter denies that he imputed dishonesty to the Daily Mail in regard to the telegram, and claims that he wrote not without justification. Referring to previous attacks on Australia he says that' there was a small grain of"' truth in them, obscured under a mass of calumny, which has done much to prevent the expansion of Australia.
The Daily Mail admits that Australia deserves, the attention of British settlers if under good government, but holds that it would be a farce to invite immigrants until the Australian Parliaments have shaken off Labour domination. It insists that the case of the excluded British hatters and others shows that the restrictions on immigrants are still in force.
THE AGENTS-GENERAL REPORT. Melbourne, December 20.
The Agents-General, in their report, placed on the table of the House of Representatives yesterday, mention the various classes of people inquiring about Australia, and state that many persons are desirous of establishing themselves in the manufacture, of articles not now represented in Australia. With very little encouragement a fair number of British capitalists could bo induced to establish themselves in Australia in those industries.
