DESTRUCTION OF SMALL BIRDS
FRICTION BETWEEN LOCAL BODIES. [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . Chiustcjiurch, Thursday. THE two local bodies in Timaru interested in the destruction of small birds, the County Council and the Borough Council, do not see eye to eye in the matter of paying for the destruction of the- pest. The County Council always docs its share of purchasing small birds' eggs and heads, but they frequently complain that the Borough Council will not assist in the matter as it should do. Some few months ago, however,'the Borough council notified the County Council that it would from that date assist, but at a meeting of the Tatter body, held yesterday, a letter was received from the patentee of a trap for small birds, stating that an employee of his, having caught a # number of sparrows and linnets in the Borough of Timaru, took them to the Borough Council office to get payment for them. After giving the employee some trouble about a certificate as to where and how the birds were caught, and after being supplied with all the particulars, the town clerk said : '■" We cannot buy birds caught wholesale like that." He had written to let the County Council know how the borough, was treating the county. A suggestion was made that the Act should be enforced to make the borough buy small birds, but the chairman said it seemed to be useless to try to make the borough do its duty in this respect.
