BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland Education Board was held yesterday,; Mr. ,S. Luke (chairman) presiding. There were also present: Messrs. (v. L. Peacodke, C. J. Parr, •J. D. McKenzie, L. .T. Bagne.ll, G. Edgecumbe, A. R. Harris, J. Stallworthy, and H. J. Greenslade. '

Selection of Teachers: The report of the Teachers' Selection Committee, covering the following recommendations, was adopted — That the following appointments be authorised by the Board: Mr. H. C. Jaffrey, to be headmaster of. Kaukapakapa school Mr. Rupert C. Moore, to bo teacher of Oturoa school: Miss Violet M. Cooke, to be teacher of Whangaroa North school. That school committees bo consulted in regard to proposed appointments as follows: Te Kuiti (headmaster), Messrs. E. A. Power, W. II: V. Hall, E. J. Corbett, J. Sutton, and F. S. - Ransom; Ahuroa (sole teacher), Misses J. .12. Hefford and 11. H. Hardy; Otonga and Opiiawbanca, half-time (sole teacher), Mr. Ivon F. McDonald; Wailii District High School (master), Messrs. G. Bigg-Wither, 8.A., A. R. Garland, 8.A., and E. W. B. Caddy; Karangahake (assistant), Miss M. Maxwell and Mrs. R. W. York; Paeroa (assistant), Misses A. E. Hawkes and M. M. Hodge; Devonport (assistant), Misses L. E. Bayliss, E. Bongard, E. Cardno, G. I. Smith, nud W. L. Stovcns; To Kuiti (assistant), .Miss O. A. McMillan. That applications be invited by advertisement for the undernamed appointments: Second assistant masters, Waihi, £190: Oneliunga, £180; Mount Eden, £165; male assistants, £130, Dargaville, To Kopuru, Otahuhu, Tauranga, and • Horahora; female assistants, Tararu, £110; Nelson-street, £85; Grafton, £85. That the 18 pupil-teachers whose term of indenture will expire at December 31 inst., be continued in employment for a fifth year of service, and bo required to enter for University matriculation examination, in order to qualify for admission to the Trailing College in 1907. Finance Committee's Report: The report of the Finance Committee, among other matters, contained the following clauses:—Your committee recommend payment of the following accounts: Administration account, £9062 9s lid; manual and technical account, £334 17s 4d; building fund account, £1239 16s 6d. Your committee submit a report friftn the chief inspector regarding the admission of students to the Training College, and recommend that the Minister should be asked to authorise the admission of any matriculated pupil-teacher who has had a full year's service. The report was adopted. Tenders; The tender of Mr. A. Grayson (£287) for a school building at Kinohaku (Kawhia), being considerably in advance of the grant (£220), it was decided to ask the Department for an increased grant. The tender of Messrs. Brown Bros. (£451) for additions to the school building at To Kopuru was accepted. Grants for School Buildings: The Department not having replied to the Board's request for an increase in the grant for school buildings, it was decided to allow the matter to stand in abeyance in the meantime. Organisation of Normal School: The secretary reported that no reply had been received from the Minister for Education .regarding tho organisation of the normal school (Wellesley-street). The matter was one of urgency, as the master, Mr. Patterson, would arrive in Auckland about the beginning of February. The staff appointments lecomtpendsd bad to bo approved by the Minister, and it was necessary that the Board should be in a position to aci forthwith. Three telegrams had boon sent to the Minister by the Inspector-General (Mr. Hogben) and "two by tin? Board, but no answer had been received from the Department. I The Board decided to send a further comj munication to the Minister, representing the ! urgency of the matter, and asking for an S early reply, and it was left to the Executive Committee of the Board appointed to act over the holidays to deal with tho matter. ■ Exhibits for International Exhibition: A circular was received from the committee of the New Zealand .International Exhibition, inviting exhibits In sa-nbatloll and hygiene. The matter was referred to the Board's architects. Messrs. Mitchell and Watt. , Chapel-street School: The Board deferred consideration of an application from the City Schools Committee to provide additional accommodation -st tho Chapel-street school. New Buildings: Applications for now schools were dealt, with as under:—Rangitani: The inspector reported adversely on the erection of a school building on the site suggested, and'expressed the opinion that a school might bo provided further down, where the residents had offered to provide tho ! necessary building. It was decided to refer i "the inspector's letter to the applicants.- Ka- j kapuka (Kihikihi): Tho letter of the applicants, asking for reconsideration of the I Board's refusal to provide a school, was re- j ferred to the inspector to report. Ivatikati: : Referred to tho inspector to report. Applications from Awakino, Kaimarama, Matatoke, and-Port Charles were adversely reported upon, and were declined. Waihi East: The Board decided to ask tho Minister for Education for a grant of £590 for the erection of a separate school to accommodate 200 children at Waihi East. Next Meeting: The next ordinary meeting of the" Board was fixed for Wednesday, January 24 .
