[BY TET.EQBiPII.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] iNVEP.rARGri.r,, Wednesday. The Southland Metropolitan Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show opened yesterday. 'The weather was cloudy, with a southerly wind, and from throe p.m. rain fell steadily. Only cattle -■ arid sheep were judged yesterday, the championships going as follows Shorthorn bull, H. Carswell: cow, G. Anderson; Hereford bull and cow, .T. Holmes; Polled Aligns bull and cow, W. " * Officer; Ayrshire, bull .T. Campbell, cow \V. Ratikin ; Jersey, bull A. i Small, cow T. Fleming. The number of exhibits ?in all classes, - except short- -iifi horns, was disappointingly small. The-sheep '"v'lisl championships were won fas follows: Border . -\ Leicester, ram, A. Grieve,, ewe .T. McCrostie; Eng- ' t lish . Leicester, rain A. Murdoch, ewe W. J. Johnston; Romney rani and ewe, T. L. Barnhill; Lincoln, ram .1. B. Button, ewe U. P. Johnston; Shropshire, lam J. S. Grieve, ewe T. . Evans; ..• -' '-•pi Cheviot rani and ewe, T. L. Barnhill; merino ;j rant, W. J. Johnston. In crossbreds J."" Tough{®ii® and W. S. Fleming were the chief 'prize-takers., The latter -was also principal prise-taker for ireeiing sheep and lambs. : The sheepdog trials were won by J. B Purdue (first), R. Anderson (second), - - James Robertson (third). The show to-day attracted a record attend- *: unci. The conditions were ideal till four o'clock, when light ram began. The show *of Clydesdales, was -superb, and the buck-jumping contest was exciting. Mr. Sell won, with Mr. Hodgson second. ' To-day's championship awards were as ®§B follows Clydesdale entire: -1).
