In connection with the visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales picturesque scenes have taken place at Jaipur, the capital of the . native "State of llajputana. - The Maharajah laid his sword at; the feet of the Prince of Wales and made handsome presents, garlanded him, and escorted him to a throne on the right, himself taking the seat on the left. ' ■ . The > ; Maharaja' of ,: Jaipur is Sir /'Ma'dhb; Singh Bahadur, K.G.C.S.f., G. 0.5.1., G.0.V.0. He was born in 1861, _ and succeeded to the throne in 1880. He is head of: ; the Kuchhwaha clan of Rajputs.: : Ho is one of the most loyal subjects of the King, and maintains a welUoquipped; transport corps of : about 700 .men, > ready for active service. Among his notable beneficencies arc 2,000,000 rupees to a permanent famine , fundv for India, 100,000 rupees :to the Transvaal war fund, ■ and 75,000 rupees to; the King's : hospital fund. He is a strict Hindu, and when ho attended the Coronation of i the King ho chartered a ship for himself; and ' hisj atten-; dants, •■■ and food and water were brought from India. , His capital,.
