FIRE IN SYMONDS-STREET.
COACH. FACTORY GUTTED. A fire broke out early this morning in the j coachbuilding • factory of Mr. Gilniour, | Upper Symorids-strcet, and resulted in the j gutting of the building. The factory is i situated in the block of brick buildings between Newton • Bead and Eden Terrace, opposite the corner of ivhyber Pass. A young matt named Edward Aylctt, who . Was proceeding homewards, noticed a re- j flection of fire in the' building, and promptly gave the alarm, and then broke open the door of ■ the factory facing the street. The factory extends right through to the back of the building, arid it. has on cither side of it, at the front, a small shop, one occupied by Mils. Bennett, win* ! carries on a millinery business, and tho ; other by Mrs. Levy* Aylett managed to i get. cut the framework of a carriage, but , the fire had by this lime, got. such a hold ' of the oils, paints, etc., used in lite fac- j tory, that that was all ho could save. The } City Fire Brigade were quickly on the .scene, and in a few minutes had several lengths of fire-hose out, arid the water playing on the flames, and in about half-an-hour the fire was subdued. [ The inside of the building was quite , gutted, and, the contents all more or less i damaged. The stock of Mr. J. Spinley, j bootmaker, next door to where the fire > took place, was somewhat damaged by ' water, as was also the stock in the shops of Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Lovy.
