William Monkton, who tells the story, was in early life ' thrown into r companionship ' with Captain Thunderbolt, and* the bitter recollections of some unhappy years led him to adopt the life of bushranging.; He had with Thunderbolt many narrow escapes, and was twice severely wounded by the police. His : early ambitions for = better things, however, came ; back to him after a ' period .of bushranging, and >he left Thunderbolt and surrendered ' himself to the police. He was tried -at Armidale and sentenced to three years' imprison- ' ment, but was :>■ released after serving 14 . months, e and has since . devoted ? himself to farming, being to-day well known and much : respected in the Howell district of New South , Wales.
