THE COMING ELECTION.
EDEN. Ox Monday evening Mr. 11. French addressed the electors in the New Lynn Public j Hall, a good attendance being present. Mr. Waygood presided.' The candidate mado reference to the necessity for abolishing government by party, and adopting the elective Executive. He gave his views on tho land question, advocating tho option of the freehold, the roading of back blocks, and encouraging of .bona-fide settlement. He dealt with social reform questions, which he termed , fireside politics. His remarks were frequently applauded. After questions- had been answered, on the motion of Mrs. Thomas, - seconded by Mrs. • Morris, a vote of thanks and conficlenco was unanimously - pfej?scd.
Last night the candidate addressed a meeting in tho Presbyterian schoolroom, Morningside. Mr. J. Murdoch presided, and introduced the candidate as a man who had for years past taken a prominent part in advancing beneficial reforms, and who, if returned, would make a worthy representative. Mr. French spoke 011 the lines of his reported addresses, and gave some information on electoral matters. The candidato received a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence on the motion of Mr. Geo. Higgot. AUCKLAND WEST. Mr. T. T. Masefield addressed a largelyattended meeting at the Napier-street school last evening. _ Mr. W. A. Thompson presided, and in introducing the candidate spoke of Mr. Masefield's long public services to the Ponsonby district and the city of Auckland generally. Mr. Masefield, who was received with applause, • said that as long as the present Government did what was right' he would give them his support. He was in favour of an elective Upper House, and the Advances .to Settlors Act. The candidato thought the Government should have credit for their action in reference to . the Old Ago Pension Act. the Bank of New Zealand, State Eire Insurance Act, Arbitration and Conciliation Act, etc. He favoured tiio freehold tenure and the settling of the people on . tho land. A vote 'of thanks and confidence was moved by Mr. Culhane. seconded ■ by Mr. A. E. Glover, and carried with acclamation. .
GREY LYNN Mr. Geo. Fowlds addressed a meeting of electors in the Baptist schoolroom, Wollesley Road, Richmond, last evening. Mr. J. Robertson occupied 'the chair. The candidate reviewed : at length the various measures passed during the time he had been in Parliament. and stated that a good many of the evils that now exist through party government could be remedied by an elective Executive. - A vote of thanks and confidence' was carried ; unanimously.
j .... . AUCKLAND WEST. Mr. T. T. Masefield, a candidate for Auckland West,. spoke to tho employees of the Colonial Ammunition Factory yesterday, and was well received. A vote of thanks and support was moved by Mr. Ross and seconded" by Mrs. Oldham,-and carried by acclamation. 1 . • MR. SEDDON'S OPPONENT. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION*.] Hokitika, Tuesday. The name of the candidate selected by tlio New Zealand Alliance to contest the Westland constituency against Mr. Seddon is Mr. Harry'Cowin, a farmer of Wharema, Wairarapa district. The. candidate is absolutely unknown on the West Coast, and will not visit it. ■j FRANKLIN. [BY TELEGRAPH. CORRESPONDENT.] ; Morsjxsville, Tuesday. Mr. McCardle addressed the. electors in the Phoenix Hall, Morrinsville, on Monday. A motion of thanks and confidence was carried unanimously.MR. HERRIES AT OPOTIKI. . ' ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING. [by telegraph.— correspondent.] Ofotiki, Tuesday. Mr. W. H. Henries addressed the electors last evening. Mr. W. J. Addis' presided, and in,introducing 1 Mr. Herries referred to him as admitted, both by the Government and the Opposition, to be one of the leading . politicians in New Zealand. (Cheers.) The hall - was densely : packed, the audience being the largest ever ; seen in Opotiki, and was ' most enthusiastic. Mr. Herries dealt with, the political questions of the day, and fully- expounded the % Opposition policy. Questions were answered to th© satisfaction
of the meeting. Mr. J. B. Gow moved a ■hearty vote of thanks -to Mr. Herries for his able address, which was seconded by Mr. Chas. Newsham, and carried unanimously. The audience •at this point could not restrain their enthusiasm, and gave hearty cheers for Mr. Herries. A vote of .thanks to'the chairman concluded the largest and most successful meeting ever held in Opotiki. ISSUE OF WRITS. •: [BY telegraph.—press association.] - ' Wellington, Tuesday. WHO WILL WIN? SIR J. WARD'S OPINION. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Invercargill, Tuesday. Sir Joseph Ward was banqueted by the Bluff Liberal and Labour Federation last night.Replying to a toast in his honour, the. Minister said that after extended inquiries from Auckland to Bluff, lie believed I the Government would have an undiminished majority in the next Parliament. ■ . ' ' EDEN. Mr. John Bollard addressed the. electors of Eden on Monday evening in "the Epuorii Hall. There was a good attendance. Mr. E. W. Burton occupied the chair.
