COMMERCIAL.
New Zealand Herald Office, • Tuesday evening. Business was not quite so brisk on tho sharemarket to-day, and the' sales were confined to mining stocks. Waihis sold at £7, and were in demand at £7 Os 6d, late sellers advancing to £7 2a. 6d. Waiotahis were again a little easier, the sales being at 97s and 97s 6d. Late sellers were at 975, and buyers were offering 95s 6d. Talismans sold at 19s 4d, and closed with buyers at 19s 2d, sellers holding for 19s 6d. - Now May Queens were firm, and had sales. at 3s lOd and 3s lid. More were wanted at 3s lid, late sellers demanding 4s. Kuranui-Oaledonians eased a bit, and changed hands at 2s and 2s Id ; lato sellers 2s 2d, buyers 2s Id. Kura-nui-Oaledonian rights" sold at t sd. -New Saxons had buyers at 9^d; late sellers lOd, buyers 9d. Sales were made in Victorias at 2s 7d; late sellers 2s Bd, buyers 2s 6d. Golden Belts (paid up) were placed at 3s Id, 3s 2d, and 3s Id, and the market closed with demand at 3s, sellers asking 3s 2d. Contributing shares in the same company sold at 2s 4d: late sellers 2s 6d, buyers *2s 4d. j Koniata Reefs were dealt in at 2s Id and 2s 2d, and there was inquiry at 2s Id at the last call, sellers 2s 3d. Waihi Extended* were a shade firmer, with sales at 5s 4d, at which price more were asked for, late sellers 5s od. Wool: The second sale of the season took place to-day in Christchurch. Particulars of prices obtained will be found in another column. A London report by the 'Frisco mail states:"There is little to report since the close of the auctions, operations of necessity being much restricted, in consequence of the" very limited amount of stocks in importers' hands and the general desiro to hold for the next auctions rather than sell privately. Reports from the manufacturing districts, both .at Home and abroad, are satisfactory, and the general position may be considered sound, whilst it would appear, in view of the depletion of stocks, that supplies will have to bo on a very liberal scale before the market is likely to feel the effect of them; indeed, by many it is considered quite possible that the probable increase of about. 250,000 bales during the coming season will be absorbed withoutthe market materially 'giving way. The reason given for this is stated to bo that manufacturers must again get their stocks up to normal conditions, and further, while it is admitted that the cessation of war in tho East has caused a falling oft" in demand for " kharki" goods, the general improvement. all round in trade which lias already set in will, they say, raore than compensate for this. Be this as- it may, it would at \ least seem that consumers are becoming more reconciled to the high prices ruling, and, indeed, are looking for a continuance of such conditions for a time. It must, however, be borne in mind that prices are high, and a policy of caution would, under such conditions, bo the prudent - one to adopt." It is estimated that the supplies for next sales, to commence on November 28, will amount to about 110,000 bales." General trade continues very brisk, there being a heavy turnover in all departments. This is the busy week in what is one of the busiest months of the year, so that active trade is only what can be expected. Tho mail steamer has arrived with another large cargo of general American goods, of which some lines come to a good market. Potatoes were well sold to arrive at about £12 10s, there being practically no stocks held. A few old arrived from tho South last week, but these were all cleared at 15s in a very bare market. There is no change in the position of new potatoes. Samples arriving are very small, but if fine weather continues there should be an improvement. ►Business in grain is rather quiet, but-all prices are firm. There is no change in maize, the only arrivals being 100 sacks by the Waiotahi and 520 by the. Albatross, which sold readily in a bare maiiket at late rates. The market- is a little easier in Australia, but we are advised that the weather conditions still point to full prices in grain. Seed maize is in demand. Oats have easily maintained the advance already reported. There is little business passing, but stocks are light, and even in the absence of export business the prices keep firm. It is estimated that all that are now held in store will be required before next harvest. Fowl wheat is now firm at 3s 6d ex wharf and 3s 7d ex store. . Bran and pollard show no change, and are in good demand. Southern oatmeal has advanced '203 per ton, and local 15s, owing to the high market in oats. " Chaff, has advanced another 5s per ton, and Southern is now quoted at £5 10s on the wharf. The first of the new Australian onions arrived by the Zealandia, and are selling at 14s - ; Turnip seed is meeting an improved demand. - • • Tho metal markets are very firm in England and in tho States. A London report states that a fair amount of business in load has boon negotiated. «•' For some time "it looked as if the demand had been fully-met by tho arrivals from Spain and Australia, but consumers again camo on the market, and values became firmer. The fear of Continental ,■ labour - troubles causing a cuttailed demand is 1 to some extent contributing to forced realisations. Otherwise the metal would possibly have advanced further. Spelter is very, firm. There is meantime an exceptionally largo demand both from galvanisers and for yellow metal sheets. This demand has revealed a shortage in supply, and stocks are now practically depleted. Consumers aro therefor© freely taking up any lots offering. The production for the next few months is fully engaged, and at present rate of consumption the position will soon become very acute. Sheet Zinc: In sympathy with the firm tone of the spelter market, makers of sheets have advanced their quotations. Antimony is reported weaker in London, | but quicksilver is in hotter demand. - A Singapore report gives the following on [ sago and tapioca:—"The recent advance has apparently been pushed too far, and although supplies are not increasing at all our market seems likely to move back a little. Speculators have been actively buying up this article, both here and in London, and no doubt succeeded in catching uncovered " bears" to some extent, but the trade are only buying just sufficient to keep them going and will do their best to get prices down again. We do not, however, look for a return to the low love! of six months ago. Our present small supplies consist chiefly ol flake and medium pearl, with very little really " fair" seed, although there is" plenty of common Penang seed coming in." Black Pepper: The American demand, which has been very active this season, has almost ceased, and with little inquiry from other countries our market has gradually fallen away during the month. Moderate supplies aro still coming out, but it is the end of t{ie crop, and prices should not gc much lower. White Pepper: Increasing supplies from Sarawak have as we anticipated been more than sufficient for the demand, and this kind is also considerably down since last month. There is, however, a feeling that we shall not go very much lower without attracting speculative buyers -as well as consumers, which would soon check tho decline. Supplier will he ample for tho next two or three months. Spices: Nutmegs ai*o in quiet demand, and prices still declining. Maco is also dul and neglected. While the above is the statr of the markets in Singapore, there is littlo doing here, as the season is hardly openec yet. All spices will be in better demanc shortly. Wo are .advised fby the "Frisco mail thai it is still impossible to get orders executed for some of tho better brands of sardines. . Butter: A London report has the follow ing, dated October 19:— butter marke 13in . a healthy state, although some falling on in the demand has been occasioned owing to the big retail stores having ad vanced their prices Id per lb. Iho late arrival of the Victoria makes i rather d| x "-J" to describe exactly the stati of t 10 Australian market, but it is practical unchanged from last week, and we thin! prices should rule:— finest salted, 110s w •f nd finest unsalted,:.ll2s, 114s. . We have nothing to report with regard t< New Zealand butter, as the now season'; shipments have not yet commenced to ar rive. NEW ZEALAND LOAN AND MERCANTILI AGENCY CO.'S, Ltd, REPORT.
