Udaipur is a. town of about 46,000 inhabitants. It has a magnificent royal palace, built of granite and marble, and standing' on a ridge above a lake. A chain of fortresses, now falling'into decay, covers all the roads leading 1 to the city. Overlooking the- town is a fortified hill.
