The Union Company's steamer Wanaka, with a part cargo of grain and produce from the South, left Gisborno for Auckland yesterday morning, and is due this afternoon. The steamer leaves tor the Bluff, Oamaru, and Timaru on Saturday to load grain and produce for Auckland. i THE SOUTHERN CROSS. The Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross, Captain W. Sinker, arrived yesterday morning from a cruise to the Islands. The chief officer reports that during the cruise the steamer called at 144 places. The Southern Cross reached Norfolk Island 'on Friday last, and left on Saturday for Auckland. Fine weather was experienced in the Islands and oil the run to' Auckland. An account of the steamer's cruise amongst the Islands will be found elsewhere in this issue.

The barque Northern Chief, which was reported in the gulf on Monday evening, made port yesterday morning, and, being granted pratique, was towed up to Chelsea to discharge her cargo of coal at the Sugar Works. Captain Kassens resports sailing from Newcastle on Nevember 9, and experienced light variable weather to Cape Maria van Diemen, which was passed on Friday last, .thence to arrival fresh southerly winds.
