THE PANAMA CANAL.
SEA-LEVEL PLAN. ADOPTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright-. New York, November 19. The board of engineers of the Panama Canal have, finally decided in favour of the making of a sea-level canal, though the change of plan will mean that ten years longer will be occupied in construction.
The late chief engineer of the. Panama Canal, -Mr. Wallace, speaking at Chicago in September last, said his staff had solved the problem of diverting the Cbagres River, which is a large and turbulent stream. In a report submitted later lie said he was in favour of a return to the original plan of M. do Lesseps for a sea-level canal, as the better and cheaper in the. end. He estimated that it, would cos! £60,000,000 to maka a sea-level canal, and thai the work would occupy 20 years. .Some time afterwards he resigned owing to friction with the Com-' missioners, and his scheme for a sea-level canal was abandoned for a canal with locks. There are. eminent English engine-era who believe that it will take forty years to make a sea-level canal and to divert the Chagres River by means of the greatest dam yet designed.
