POLICE COURT NEWS.

ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. A NATIVE of Sweden, named Harry EkhmcT, pleaded guilty before Mr. "R. W. Dyer, S.M., at the Police Court with attempting to commit suicide by hanging, himself with a rope. The facts, as elated by Sub-Inspector Black, wero to the effect that the accused had been lodging with Mrs. Mary Allen, in Nelson-street. i About halfpast* eight on Thursday evening Mrs. Allen heard a noise in the collar, where she found the. accused hanging by his neck by means of a rope attached to one of the beams. She immediately cut him down. Constable Nash was afterwards informed of the. occurrence, and arrested the accused. He told Constable Nash he would do it again. SubInspector Black also said that it was stated that about three months ago the accused attempted to commit suicide. The accused had nothing to say, and was remanded for a week for medical.treatment. ; • '•'. A DARING THIEF. -.

SHOP WINDOW SMASHED. Arthur Horace Browne was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Messrs. Dadley and Sons, bootmakers, Queen-street, and stealing a pair of boots, valued at £1 4s. 6d. , Sub-Inspector Black prosecuted. The accused was undefended. . .■,;' Charles S. Goldsmith, foreman for Messrs. Dadley and Sons, gave evidence to the effect, that when he left the shop on the. previous day the window was quite safe, and the boots produced were then in the corner of the window where it had been smashed. Constable Tait said he was duty in Queen-street at about a-quarter past one a.m. on Friday, and heard a noise like glass breaking. Ho went in the direction of the noise, and saw the accused running away. Witness ran after him and caught him. The accused had a pair of boots in his possession. Witness took the accused back to the shop, and found that thero was a large hole in the window. Witness said to the accused, "What's this you're up to?" and the accused said, " They won't pay me the money they owe me, and this is the only way to get even with them." The. accused also stated that he intended pawning the boots, as he was starving. Near the window was a pieoe of iron piping, which the accused said he smashed the window with. Witness then .arrested Rim. The accused did not give 'evidence, but stated he would shortly get money and pay for the damaged window. He pleaded guilty, and was committed for sentence.

. MISCELLANEQUS. , Elizabeth Whittcl was charged with stealing from the dwelling of Mary Ann.Korney' a purse, valued at Is, and 2s in money. On the application of Sub-Inspector Black, a remand was granted until Tuesday. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £25 each. At the instance of Mr. Strathcrn, relieving officer, John Byrne was charged with deserting his two children at Auckland. Defendant stated that he did not desert them, though: he was in arrears in his payments for their maintenance.- The magistrate ordered the defendant to pay 7s 6d weekly ins respect to the maintenance of each child. For drunkenness, Bridget Ma her, a second offender, was fined ss, and costs 3s, for cab hire, in default 24- hours', imprisonment; James Douglas McLcod, a previous offender, was fined 10s, in default 48 hours' imprisonment ; two first offenders were fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment; and another, who did not appear, was'ordered V forfeit the amount. of hail, £1.
