STRANGE SHOOTING AFFAIR AT BEAUFORT CASTLE.

At a pleading diet of the High Court of Justiciary in Inverness, John 8. Phipps and Henry Carnegie Phipps, sons of Mr. Henry Phipps. tie Pittsburg millionaire, and tenant of Beaufort Castle, were charged with "having, at the Silver Pool on the River Beauly, assaulted John Fraser, of Cruives, .Join Fraser, cf Besolis, and John Robertson, o f Cruives, salmon fishers, by discharging loaded guns at them, the shot from which struck, them on the head and body, the said John Fraser,' of Cruives, having his right; eye permanently destroyed and his left eve seriously injured.'" As an alternative charge, it was alleged "they recklessly discharged loaded guns in the direction ot the fishermen and inflicted injuries upon them." Accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, and the case was adjourned for trial in Edinburgh. It will be remembered that the defence is that accused thought the men were poachers, and that they fired in their direction merely to frighten 'the a. and with no idea of hitting them.
