On July 28 Mr. Farrar was sitting with his wife in their garden when Miss Flett came up and struck him across the head and shoulders with a dog whip. Mr. Farrar was searehingly cross-ex-amined by Miss Flett, but denied that lie had insulted her. A brother of Miss Flett, who was in court, at this point. cUM out excitedly, " Why don't you look her in the face - .'" Miss Flett: " You can't, you degraded scoundrel." Miss Flett. who was very excited, when asked if .she had amvthing to state in defence, said "When I was twenty-two I was engaged to him, and we were to be married when be was earning £300 a year. Then, after playing the part of my shadow, and being constantly with me for two years, he sneaked off without a word of explanation." The lady was cross-examined by Mr. Farrar's counsel, and admitted that Mr. Farmortgage on her behalf. Mr. Farrar, rerar had three times paid the interest on a called, said he had given Miss Flett altogether about £500. The magistrates, dismissing the summons against Mr. Farm*, said they must bind Miss Flett over to keep the peace for six months. As she left the box she cast an indignant look at Mr. Farrar and said, " Many a man has been shot for less."
