DROWNED FROM A PUNT.
INQUEST AT THAMES.
[CI TELKcairfl.—own cobbespoxde.vt.]
Thames, Saturday. The body of the young man Peter Young, recently drowned from a punt in the Pinko River, was recovered yesterday in one of the reaches of that river and conveyed to the Thames. The inquest was commenced this morning before Mr. Bruce, coroner, but had to be adjourned in consequence of the absence of a witness who had to be brought from the Piako. ■ The inquest was resumed at seven p.m. The evidence showed that the deceased was in a boat being towed by a steam launch up the Piako River; that he was observed to go forward into the bow of the boat, and that a sudden lurch of the boat precipitated him into the river, where, after a few seconds, lie was seen to sink before the occupants of the launch could reach him. Although the party remained at the scene of the accident for some considerable time, and every effort was made for the rescue of the unfortunate young man, it was without avail. The subsequent search for the body was also unsuccessful until yesterday. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death by drowning.
