CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAYS.
[liv telegraph.— ASSOCIATION.] Chiustchukch, Thursday. The Tramway Board has decided to obtain, the best legal opinion possible with the view of appealing against the decision of Mr. Justice Williams that the tramway special work, points and crossings, arc dutiable. It was considered a hardship that such a decision should act. retrospectively. Willi reference to complaints that the lines were in a dangerous condition, the rails showing above the level of the roadway, it was decided to make an experiment by pulling down stone blocks along the gutter edge of the rails. The necessity for additional rolling stock was commented on, and authority was given for the construction of six cars, the tenders for which close on September 7. The engineer stated that owing to the quarry owners contemplating additions to their plant, which would result in an increased supply of metal, it was possible the Riccarton line would be finished in, time for the November race traffic. The committee reported that the traffic or the portions of the system which had been electrified was steadily increasing. The objectors to the opening of the Manchester-street line for electrical traffic, are to be asked to withdraw their objections. The Traffic Committee was recommended to co-operate with the City Council in dealing with the dust nuisance. The president of the Cab Owners' Union wrote asking that preference of employment in the Board's service be given to cab-drivers. It was decided to reply thai applications, from suitable men would receive due consideration, but the Board would not bo justified in granting the rei quest.
