GOLF.

FINAL FOR THE AUCKLAND LADIES'

CHAMPIONSHIP.

The final round for the championship of the Auckland Ladies' Golf Club was played on Tuesday, the 25th inst., at the One-tree Hill Links, and resulted' in a win for Miss Eileen H. Lewis by 5 up and 4- to play. The game was between Miss Gwen Gorrie and Miss Lewis, and was closely followed by a number of enthusiasts. The weather was not conducive to very good play, as there were several showers during the game and the ground was very heavy. Mis 3 Gorrie, who has improved very much lately both in style and steadiness, and who beatMrs. W. R. Bloomfield (a former club champion) in the semi-final, played a good uphill game against her formidable opponent. At the first hole Miss Gorrie had the honour, but tapped her dirve, and failed to - oross the plantation till her fifth. Miss Lewis got a good drive, and with her third carried the plantation, and the hole fell to her in 7. The second hole was won by Hiss Lewis in 5, against Miss Gome's 6. At the Outpost I Kith failed to be 011 the green with their seconds, and the hole was halved in 5, Miss Lewis being 2 up. Miss Lewis won the Ringrox in .6, Miss Gorrie failing to carry the hedge with her drive. This left Miss Lewis 3 up at' the fourth hole; At the Grotto Miss Lewis pulled her drive, and Miss Gorrie getting a "good ball the hole fell to her in a perfect 4, against Miss Lewis' 6, leaving the latter only 2 up. Driving to the Onehunga both got good balls, Miss Lewis holing in ,5, against Miss Gorrie's 6._ At the seventh both wore 011 the. green in 4, Miss Gorrie going down in 5, her opponent taking 6, still leaving Miss Lewis two lip. The eighth hole fell to. Miss Lewis in 4, against . Miss Gorrio's 6. At the Catacombs Miss Lewis crossed the wall with a good third, Miss Gorrie failing to do so till her fifth. Miss Lewis holed in 6 against Miss Gorrie's 7, and was thus left 4 up at the ninth. The tenth fell to Miss Lewis in 5, against 7, Miss Gorrie having had luck in striking a post with her second. The Eastern Crater was well played and was halved in 4. At Jacob's Ladder both failed to reach the green with their first, but recovered themselves with good seconds, and again halved the hole in 4, ' leaving Miss Lewis 5 up _ and 6. At the Amphitheatre Miss Lewis pulled her drive info the gravel-pit, but not out of bounds, Miss Gorrie getting a good drive. Miss Lewis played a vory good second from an almost unplayable lie, and with her third made a brilliant recovery, the ball falling just short of the green. Miss Gorrie won . the hole in a well-played 4 against 6. This now left Miss Lewis' 4 up and l 5. Driving for the fourteenth hole, Miss Gorrie did not get a very good drive, and Miss Lewis, getting a good ball away, won the hole in 5 against 7, thus ending the match by 5 up and 4to play. • This is the third consecutive year in which Miss Lewis, who is the present champion of New Zealand (won at Christchurch last year), has won the . championship of the Auckland Ladies' Golf Club. Though not at the top of her form in the match 011 Tuesday, her experience of match play gave her a considerable advantage over her opponent. It -is to be hoped that Miss Lewis will render a good account of herself at the coming championship meeting at Napier next month, when a strong team of ' Auckland lady players will compete. The putting and driving' competitions on tho Auckland links also took place 011 Tuesday last, when Miss Lewis managed to annex both events. ,

The prizes won during the Auckland Ladies' Championship Meeting wore presented on Thursday last by the president of the club, Mrs, Street. In the handicap foursomes Misses Lewis and R. Buckland came first, and Mrs. W. R. Bloomfield and Miss E. C. Pierce second. Tho handicap singles were won by Miss Hazel Buckland, with Misses R. Buckland and M. Richmond (tied) second; tho approaching and'putting competition by Miss M. Richmond, with Miss G. 0. Pieroo second ; the driving competition by Miss E. Lewis, "with E. C. Pierce second; and the putting competition by Miss E. Lewis, with Miss Pierce second.

The golf matches at Cambridge for the trophies presented by the president (Mr. W. F. Buckland) and the vice-president (Dr. Coates) were completed 011 Wednesday last. Miss Mathesou won tho ladies' match with a net score of 106, and, Mr. Matheson won the gentlemen's match with a net score of 87. Miss N. Young, who was on the scratch mark, put up the best gross score in the ladies' match, her score for the two rounds being . 109. . -The Waikafco championshipsingles will be played at the links to-day. The third competition for the Fry Challenge Cup takes place at the Cornwall links this afternoon. Tho competition is one of eighteen holes (Bogey handicap), players choosing their own partners.

BOWLING. Judging from the number of bowling enthusiasts seen on the Carlton Club's winter green 011 Saturday last, it would seem safe to infer that winter bowling has fairly caught 011 in Auckland. , The following games were played:Bouskill (skip),'l6, v. Wrathall (skip), 25; Ledingham (skip), 16, v. Thornes (skip), 15; Kent, (skip), 19, v. Easton (skip), 13; Lennox (skip), 28,_ v. Osmond (skip), 10; Brimblecombe (skip), 28, v. Martin (skip), 17. Wrathall's team proved too strong for Bouskill's men.' Both teams played well, but Wrathall's drawing and driving completely beat the opposition. The game between Ledingham's and Thome's teams was a tight one right up to the end, Ledingham winning on the last head with a pretty running shot. Both played splendidly, the result showing how keenly the game was contested. Kent's team carried too many guns for the men skipped "by Eaton. Both teams played well, and particularly Ilaresnape (Kent's) and Spreckley (Eastou's). Easton and Kent have played better games. The players under the control of J. M. Lennox outpointed Osmond's representatives, the genial J. L. proving too strong for the Ponsonby skip. Brimblecombe and Martin had a keen game, Brimblccombe coining along strongly at the' finish. Both were well supported.
