SHOPS AND OFFICES ACT.
MEETING OP INSURANCE CLERKS. In connection with the protest made by the Auckland insurance clerks against the application of the Shops and Offices Act to their business, a large meeting took place on Wednesday evening, there being between 150 and 200 clerks present in the Underwriters' Association room to hear the report presented by their delegate, Mr. G. Neville, who recently gave evidence before the Parliamentary Committee in Wellington. The report disclosed a very satisfactory co-opera-tion between the insurance delegates from all four centres, illustrating in a decidedly emphatic manner the feeling of resentment that exists among insurance clerks throughout the colony. When the committee received the delegates there were no less than 60 clerks present, who followed the proceedings with the keenest interest, and upon one of the committee inquiring whether all those present received a fortnight's holiday every year, there was one chorus of " Yes," which must have been very convincing evidence of the splendid feeling and relationship existing between managers and staff. As a further illustration of the earnestness of the insurance clerks, it is worthy of note that the whole expenses incurred were subscribed, with a big margin in excess, entirely by voluntary contributions from members of staff only, managers not being requested to help in any way. A permanent committee has been appointed to guard the interests of insurance clerks, who really are perfectly satisfied with the treatment metccl out to them, and do not desire any interference by the Government or anybody else.
