SMOKE OLD JUDGE CIGAIiETTES. YOU CAN'T BEAT ''EM

CITY OF LONDON. ■;■. FAILURE OF THE- ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR STREET LIGHTING. A LONG discussion took place at yesterday's meeting of the City Corporation with regard to the relative merits of Gas and Electricity for street lighting. The Streets Committee submitted a,scheme for lighting Queen Vic-toria-street, a portion of Queen-street, Fleetstreet, and a portion of Lower Thamesstreet, with High-preesure'lncandescent Gas Lamps in lieu of Electric Arc Lamps. The Committee requested permission to install 112 Gas Lamps in the place of 47 Electric Arc Lamps in the streets mentioned, and, in stating that the initial cost would be £1950, the Committee estimated that there would be an annual saving at current prices of £363. : -«• ." ' ■ ■■ "» Mr. A. C. Morton (Chairman of the Streets Committee) said his Committee had nearly completed during the last four or five years the relighting with Incandescent Gas of the side streets of the City, to the great satisfaction of everybody. (Electricity had proved a COMPLETE FAILURE, so -far as street lighting in the City was concerned, and experience had shown that Incandescent Gas was a great improvement on it. It was proposed to light Fleet-street with the same type of. Incandescent Gas as in the magnificent Rue de'la Paix, in Paris. The Committee's report' was adopted.
