PROPOSED CHARITY FETE.
A meeting of the committee of the pro-, posed charity fete was held at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. Mr. H. 0. Tewsley, presided, and explained that the best thing'that could be done was to drop the charity fete proposed. However, if anyone felt inclined ,to go on .with anything else that would benefit local charities, well and good, but it should be kept quite distinct. '■'.;"
. Mr. A. C. Atkin deplored the lack of out side help which the promoters-of the pro posed fete had had to contend with.
The Chairman said Mr. Hannah had'called upon him with regard to an entertainment at the Skating Rink, and he (Mr. Tewsley) suggested to him that he should go on with his idea and give the proceeds to charity, as he proposed; this, he said, he was going to do. It was to be hoped that others would follow suit. ;
Mr. P. Quinlan said he would be prepared to arrange for a muff football match, but he wanted the support of the gentlemen present, so that their names would inspire confidence in the undeotaiking:.
Mr. Atkiu remarked that Mrs. Malcomson Bou'lt was prepared to give an entertainment in aid of charity before she left Auckland, to show her gratitude for- the support she had received.
.After further discussion it was decided, "That this committee does not see its way clear to make any recommendations to the general meeting which was to have been called, and, therefore, that the. general meeting will not be held."
Those present then discussed Mr. Quintan's proposal to hold a muff football match in aid of local charities. When the ways and means had been fully debated it was resolved, " That a committee be formed, independent of any previous business whatever, to cany out the arrangements for a muff football match, the proceeds to form the nucleus.of a fund for the promotion of other entertainments, including a band contest, the proceeds'from which entertainments to be finally divided among the following charities : —Veterans' Home, Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Ladies' Benevolent, Society, Society for the Protection of Women aid Children, Children's Home, Ayr-street, Parnell, St. Mary's Orphanage, and the Little Sisters of the Poor."
The committee consisted of Messrs. H. 0. Tewsley, P. Quinlan, A. J. Denniston, A. W. Ta'tton, A. 0. Atkia, Howey Walker, A. G. Hill, R. Leslie Hunt, with power to add to their number. Mr. Tatton was appointed lion, secretary, and Mr. Atkin hon. treasurer.
