THE AUCKLAND SUBURBS.
It is not astonishing that many of the residents in' such a populous suburb as Mount Ecleu are dissatisfied with the status of their district. A " road board" is a ridiculous form of local government under which to direct the, affairs of a residential area, but it is hardly a step in advance to institute a borough in its stead. t The petition which is being circulated by the supporters of better local government organisation is justified as far as it goes by sound and unanswerable arguments. If Mount Eden were an isolated district there would be no ground for criticism ; but Mount Eden is part of Greater Auckland, and cannot be effectively governed excepting through a Greater Auckland municipality. The great majority of its residents are engaged! during the day in Auckland City, and practically all of them depend upon metropolitan industry for their livelihood. Excepting My the map, it is impossible to say where Auckland ends and where Mount Eden begins, or to separate their interests in roads, water, gas, fire . prevention, trams, libraries, and every other form of metropolitan public or private service. We regret, therefore, that those Mount Ecllen residents who wish more modem and more effective local government do not join in the Greater Auckland movement and assist in carrying it to a speedily successful conclusion. For a Greater Auckland without Mount Eden cannot be conceived of as a. self-contained metropolitan organisation.
