THE GOLDFIELDS.

WAIOTAHI G.M. (JO.

BETTER QUALITY ORE TREATED.

£4134 FROM 405 TONS.

TOTAL TO DATE, £216,269 6s Bd.

During Juno the Waiotahi Gold Mining Uwnpany crushed and treated a better quality of ore than during the preceding period. The return' for the month was 15440z of retorted gold, which melted! down to 151'ioz, valued at £4134. This return is but £2 short of* that for May last, on which occasion, however, 426 tons of general ore And 3501]) of -picked stone were dealt with. On the present occasion, not only was no picked) stone treated, but the tonnage of general ore was smaller, so that it is evident that the quartz won has been of better quality. Undoubtedly the new pans have helped slightly towards the present increase, but, as these have only been in use for about two weeks, the difference roadie cannot have been material. The total amount won from the mine to date is £216,269, 6s Bd, as shown in the following table of details: —

The tributers in the Kuranui-Caledonian mine have crushed 38 loads of general ore and 151b of picked stone for the month, for the return of 84oz of gold, of the value of £226 18s lid.

TALISMAN CONSOLIDATED G.M. CO. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] Waihi, Monday. Development work at the Talisman mine (Karangahake), continues to afford satisfaction. The lode at No. 12 level has now been driven upon north of the shaft for about 70ft since its intersection, its average width being about 6ft. The reef has maintained a good width along until a break came in and interfered slightly with the size and quality of the ore. The reef was picked.up to-day on the north side of the break, and the ore looks exceedingly well. This drive is going towards th« Woodstock, though there is a considerable distance to negotiate before reaching the 'boundary. The lode promises to develop exceedingly well at this .level, as a rise has been carried up a height of about 13ft south of the break referred to, and in this working the lode looks very promising, being fully 6ft wide, and carrying highgrade ore. Driving south on the lode is also being prosecuted at this level, the face having been advanced a distance of 151 ft from starting point. The reef varies from 10ft to 30in, but the ore is of low grade, the country being disturbed by a series of faults. But a decided change for the better has manifested itself. The country is much firmer, whilst the ore shows a slight increase- in value. The sinking of the main shaft is still under way, and very good progress is being made. A depth of 387 ft has been reached, and at 380 ft the chamber for the No. 13 level is now being cut out, preparatory to opening up and developing the lode. This level 'will bo 200 ft below No. 12, and it will be very interesting to watch developments, especially in view of the fact that, taking the the trig station at Karangahake as the surface, the Talisman Company are carrying on operations at a greater depth probably than any mine in New Zealand. This new ore at No. 13 level will be fully 1800 ft below the surface, and may be expected to show a continuous lode for the whole of that depth, not taking the underlie into consideration. When No. 13 level chamber is completed, the shaft will be continued for a further depth of 50ft, -for the purpose of putting in ore-bins, etc., and then crosscutting at No. 13 station will be commenced. It is anticipated that tin lode will be met with in about 40ft or SOft of driving. There is no change to report from the upper works, all of which are contributing their quota of crushing material. MINE. MANAGERS' REPORTS. Bunker's Hill G.M. Co.: Driving is being continued in the crosscut at the adit level. A distance of 12ft was driven for' the week, makino- a total of 415 ft.. The workings are still penetrating a good and well-mineralised country. ' ,''„>,. mi x Hauraki Freeholds G.M. Co.: The stope in progress on the lona reef continues to produce strong dabs and 'blotches of gold. The reef maintains its size of 2ft, and the prospects are encouraging. While fossicking on the reef in the floor or the drive connecting the adit level with the rise on this reef some nice blotches of gold were obtained and in consequence a winze was started to prove its value downwards. A distance of 4ft has been sunk, and at tins p 5 the quartz is Ift in width, and blotches of "old continue to be seen. As no . go.cl was seen in the drive, this face will be bus- !«« for a time, and the men removed to the winze, with a view to expedite the sinking. n ~ Co- The drive on the r Golden Belt &«•(*■--"" reef has urni more to the east, and at.present we turned more to the east, and at piesent we have oZ got'the footwall portion m the Sve We are gradually turning the drive 2nd to a few days we will- have the main il^Niy^oodhe^.sb; ing made with the battery, and the wtopipes are well in hand. x KuramnG.il.Uo.. de d drive on No. I reei wuu kin(T the total .further distance rnMJt, rem crosscut i distance driven on the, reef Iron i 34ft.
