It is stated (says the Christchurch Press) that an ambitious attempt was recently made-.to convey " undeclared " liquor from a licensed into a no-licensed district .the colony. For the purpose of the blockaderunning expedition a traction engine and a derelict ehaffcutter wore procured. The interior mechanism of the latter was removed, and the space thus made available, filled with bottles containing fiery spirits of varying potency. From what can be gathered, the engine-drivei and firemen made frequent tests of their- argo, with the result that the engine was run off the road and upset. The chaffoutter shared its fate, and in the process disgorged a large portion of its freight. _ Somebody riding past promptly communicated with the polioe by telephone, and a strong force proceeded to the scene of the disaster. The men in charge of the 'wreckage, however, safely resisted an attempt to take the liquor under the _ sheltering of the law, as it was still within the license district, having come to grief within a biscuit toss of the border. For Bronchial Coughs take Woods' Great Peppermint fiats. Is 6d.
