ATHLETIC NOTES.

HOCKEY. SATURDAY'S CHAMPIONSHIP MATCHES. - The hockey championship matches were continued on Saturday afternoon. On the Domain ground Auckland A beat United, and College Rifles defeated Auckland B. _ Tho Moana ladies also succeeded in defeating St. George's ladies after a very even game. AUCKLAND A V. UNITED. This game was productive of some capital play by both teams, though in the second spell Auckland had the advantage. Ihe red and blacks' first score was the result of a good piece of work by Mason, and, passing to Jessup,' the latter shot a clever goal. Brook-Smith scored the second from a pass by Cowper. The rest of the spell was fairly even, the play being hard and last. In the second half the reds' forwards, by the aid ot some good passing, scored a couple more reals. J. Lenine notching the third, and Brook-Smith "the last. For Auckland, Allen, Hill, and Kavanagh were the best of the backs Mason, at centre-forward, initiated most of the passing, the United baoks payin" wreat attention to him. Ho was well supported by Brook-Smith and Cowper. For the" losers, Doyle was safe in goal, and Huss"y and Porter were prominent among the backs, while Barry, Lepine, and Hcsketli were responsible for some good work m the forward line. Mr. Cooke was referee, and gave every satisfaction. OOLLEQB RIFLES V. AUCKLAND B. The match between the College Rifles and Auckland B teams was played oi> the Domain ground, and resulted in a win for the College Rifles by six goals to one. The game was fairly interesting, but the College Rifles had something the best of if all through. For Auckland B, Reid was the best of the backs, and Young and Donovan were the pick of the forwards. For the winners, Steele and Williamson each scored two goals, and Coles, Bloomfield, and 0. Whyte one each. Young scored for Auckland B. Mr.' Wright had charge of tho whistle, and gave satisfactory decisions. JUNIOR GRADE. United A v. College Rifles: This match was played at Remuera on Saturday, and, notwithstanding that United had only nine men throughout the game, they managed to win comfortably by four goals to ml. lne first swell ended with United leading by three goals,' scored by Donovan (2) and Hesketh (1) After the change of ends-the play was a little more even, but United put on another goal, scored by Hay. For thei winners, Cosset and Moody (backs) and Steele and Boylan (forwards) played good games. Donovan and Hay (forwards) and Anderson (back) were the pick of the United players. Mr. Walkei refereed to the satisfaction of both teams. m ~ Auckland v. United B; This match resulted in a win for Auckland by three goals to nil. From the bully, Auckland attacked with great vigour, but their efforts were nullified by their forwards crowding together. 'From a. scramble the Auckland backs got the ball out to their wing (Brady), who, after carrying it down the field, shot a good goal. Auckland keot the ball in United's quarters all the rest of the spell, but did not score. In tho second spell Auckland again attacked vigorously, and" were successful in shooting two more goals, Culpan and Horspool being the scorers. United rallied a little towards the end, but the defence of the Auckland backs was too sound. For Auckland, Speight and Short- (backs) and Horspool and Hayman (forwards) played good, hard-games, and for United, Sarah and Falconer (baoks) aud'Dennison and Clark (forwards) were most prominent. United played two men short. 'VARSITY LADIES V. THE MEN. A very interesting match was played between teams representing the 'Varsity Ladies' and Men's Hockey Clubs, the latter playing in female attire. At the outset the ladies attacked strongly, and Miss Jacoken, coming away with a good rush, beat the opposing backs, and centred to Miss. Dunlop, who sent a welldirected pass to Miss Webb, the latter scoring the first goal. Soon afterwards, from a scramble, tho men equalised matters. The ladies again renewed the attack, and Miss Jacobseu scored with a nice shot. Miss Scott got well down the field, but was.unsupported; then, immediately afterwards, fine combined passing between Misses Jacobsen, Dunlop,- and Webb enabled thA > lastnamed to score her second goal. Dineen camo away and scored for the men, and the spell ended: Ladies 3 goals, men 2 goals. In the second spell the superior weight of the men fold its tale, and they put on two goals to the ladies' one (a beautiful shot by Mies Scott), and the game ended four all. Amongst the ladies, Miss Webb, at bully, used her stick cleverly and shot well, and tho Misses Jacobsen and Scott, on the wings, ; both played dashing games 1 . They time and' again beat the opposing backs, but wero not too well supported 'by the inside players. Miss Dunlop, at centre-half, played a brilliant game, and was easily the best back on the ground, feeding her forwards with fine, powerful drives, and tackling very strongly. Miss Dineen, at fullback, and Miss Griffin, in goal, both played well. Dineen and Moodie showed' up well in the forwards for the men, and Scott in the backs, but there was a decided lack of cohesion in the team. The game was watched' by a large number of interested spectators. Mr. Melville refereed very capably. GOLF. The final of the men's foursomes match was played off on Saturday on the Cornwall links, and resulted in a win- for W. B. Colbeck and 11. Gilfillan, jun._ (4) off J; C. Burns and l D. Hay (5) by six strokes, after being all square at the eleventh. The final in the captain's prize (Mr. W. B. Colbeck) was also played for, with the result that in tho senior division W. Heather beat.
