NON-ATTENDANCE AT CHURCH
REPORT OF A PRESBYTERIAN COMMISSION. INTERKSTING DISCUSSION. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CHKiBTcnVRCTI, Tuesday. The report of a commission which visited St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in this city was read at a meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery to-day. Referring to the question of non-attendance at church, the report stated that in the immediate- surroundings of ,he church there was a fair percentage of socialists and labour league men. The Rev. Mr. Maxwell asked why this was mentioned. The clerk (the Rev. P. Wilson) said it was to show that the conditions were somewhat, hard for the minister to work under. Mr. Maxwell asked if the league was essentially ant i-Christian. Mr. Bowie, an elder of St. Andrew's, said he could put his ringer on one or two persons of the class referred to who poohpoohed the idea of going to church, and said there was no need for it. Mr. Maxwell thought it. was a pity to mention the league. It. was agreed, on the motion of Mr. Bowie, to delete the reference objected to from the report, the mover adding that it cast, reflections on a class of people who might not like it.
