A iLfcM.uiKAiJi.ic accident took place at Beaufort, in Victoria, the other day. A railway employee named John McCarthy was opening the gates over.the crossing, when he was struck by the guard's van. He fell on the rails, and the spectators were horrified to see the whole tram pass over one of his legs. A rush was made to render assistance, but McCarthy suddenly sat up and laughed heartilv. The sympathetic crowd was paralysed into silence, but there was general laughter when he reached over, and. picking up his severed leg, shouted, "It's my wooden one!'' McCarthy, some years ago, lost his leg in un accident, and he says that for the first time in his life he was glad of that accident, as it rendered the amputation the most painless operation in the world. The wooden leg that has served him faithfully for years was, however, destroyed. *
