Nathan, said that within the past month two of their most tespecied member*, each the head of a largo commercial house, had passed away. At a recent meeting of the council, inference was made to (he death of Mr. L. I). Nathan, and now it became hi; sad duly to refer to the death oi his cousin, Mr. A. 11. Nathan. A member of lite chamber for many years, the late Mr. Arthur Naihan had held otlico on the council several times. rilling the positions of vice-president and president. with credit to himself, and with cut benefit to the chamber. Tito position In held iii .he commercial community at the time of his death afforded' ample evidence of his capability, energy .and perseverance, and when one considered that he was eutiicly a .self-made man. one could only regret- that, he had. not been spared to enjoy the reward of his assiduous application to his work. As ft competitor in business, he had many opportunities of observing his great tact cud unfailing courtesy to all with, whom he came in contact, and. above all, his integrity in all matters, and lie could speak with certainty of the groat esteem in which lie was liekl by the commercial community, ami, in particular, by his fellow merchants and clients. In Mr, Arthur Nathan Auckland lost a citizen whose place it would be difficult to (ill, and ihey as a chamber valued a member who was always ready to give them the benefit of his wide experience. He thought that it was most fitting that they should place on record their appreciation of his services rendered to the chambet, and he therefore moved :—" That the council of the Chamber of Commerce records with deep regret the death of Mr. Arthur 11. Nathan, merchant, an ex-president, and for many years an active and valuable member of the council, whose efforts in forwarding the interests of the chamber have been. greatly appreciated by his fellow members, and that (lie mombow of this council desire to express to Mrs. Nathan and family, and to Mr. Sidney Nathan .and his brothers, (heir sincere sympathy with them in their bereavement." The motion was carried unanimously.
