AUL-KLAXD SHOPKEEPERS TAKING ACTION. INDIGNATION MEETING TO BE MELD. A i.AKi.i;!.v-A'n'K.vi>r.n meeting of the Petition and Defence Committee, set up by the Auckland shopkeepers to deal with clause 5 of the Shop, and OH tecs Act, passed last session, was held in Mr. J. M. Shorn' office, at the Mercantile Chambers, yesterday afternoon, for the purpose of considering what action should be taken in reference to the enforcement of the objectionable clause as from Saturday next. Mr, Unas. Bagley presided. The pies, -were excluded from the meeting. After some discussion, during which the action of the Governmentwas severely condemned, it was decided to hold a public, meeting in the Federal Hall, Wcllesley-street, to-morrow evening, to oppose clans? 3. The secretary, Mr. Shera, was then instructed to invite, the city and suburban members, the Mayor and members of the City Council and the Mayors ami councillors of Parncll, Newmarket, and Grey Lynn, to attend, and to ask the Muyoi of Auckland (.Mr. A. M. Myers) to preside. The committee also decided that similar and .subsequent meetings (on dates to be arranged) should be held in Newmarket, Darnell, and Grey Lynn. A suggestion put forward at the meeting, and which found much favour among tho committee, was that the shopkeepers should also hold a demonstration, in the form of a procession, through the streets of the city.
