WAIHI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
THE FINANCES.

Waihi, Tuesday. A SPECIAL meeting of the Borough Council was held last night to consider the financial position of the borough.
The Mayor said : After allowing for commitments of the Council there would be a sum of about £300 per fortnight to be allocated to work. This would permit the reduction ~>i the overdraft, by over £3000 during the year. Seeing the present financial position of the borough, he thought the best thing to do was to borrow £7000, of which £5000 would be used to complete the waterworks and £2000 for the abattoirs.
Mr. Foster wanted to know why £5000 was required for the waterworks. The material, including the pipes, would cost, according 10 the engineer's estimate, £1400, and the labour £400. This was, he understood, to cover the cost of the extension of the waterworks. He would like to have plans and everything plainly laid before them before considering the matter further. Mr. Donaldson said that the £1400 was for the temporary extension, and not for the completion of the waterworks scheme. The engineer explained that no plans had been prepared for the completion. His estimate hud been for a temporary extension. The Mayor explained that at the present moment lie waterworks had absorbed £1000 of the ordinary funds, and if £5000 was borrowed £1000 would have to be paid Mr. Foster thought that they should be able t.i give a reasonable answer to inquirers as to why they wanted to borrow £5000 .'or the waterworks. • Eventually it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Henderson, seconded b> Ml. Donaldson "That, the engineer prepare plans and report as soon as possible or an extension of the waterworks to the value of £6000. On the motion of Mr. Colebrook, seconded by Mr. Donaldson, it was resolved, "That inquiries be made of the , Government as to the possibility of a loan of £6000 for waterworks and £2000 for abattoirs." . . i ,i . i It was decided to do away with the dustcart, thus effecting a saving of about £50 per year. It was resolved that overtures lie made to the local racing clubs with a view of ascertaining if they would lease the domain. The total expenditure for the ensuing -year was estimated at £10,300. The Mayor said that if they did not accept the scheme he had submitted that night he would not be responsible for the '{borough's finances at the end of the year. i, Another special meeting on the same subI'je'ct is to-be held on Monday next.
