DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER.

Wellington*, Tuesday. Mr. G. 11. Luxkokd, who died on Sunday, was one of Wellington's earliest settlers. He came here with his parents and a score of other relations, in his fourteenth year, in the ship Adelaide, arriving in Fori Nicholson in March, 1310. He took pan in all the struggles and vicissitudes incidental to the settlement of the Hult Valley and Wellington City. He went through (■he dangers of the .Maori troubles, and was working in the I'orirua district in 1846. the year of To Kaiiparaha's capture in that locality. He also became a lieutenant m the militia organised to defend the colonists against the ■ natives. Turning from war to practice the arts of peace, Mr. Luxford became a farmer in the Uairarapa, and his ventures as a grazier met with much success. Subsequently lie transferred his interest to the Mauawatu district, and was too owner of much land in that district nt the time of his death. He made the first reclamation froc the sea in Wellington (in Willis-street), and spent the last years of his life on the town acre which he acquired in 18*1.
