On Wednesday evening (April 26), &f> East Tamaki, a* large number of friends and neighbours met us a. surprise party to take. farewell of Mr. and Mrs. T. 11. Speer, who' are leaving that district, after a residence of over 40 years,, to settle in Auckland..., The party was one of the largest ever sees* ";■ in the district, a'bout 120 ladies and gentlemen being present. During an interval its the programme, Mr. James Cargo presented Mr. and Mrs. .Speer with two elegant arm-, chairs and cushions as ■>, token of the respect with which the recipients were regard*?* by these among whom they have lived fon .-."> many years', and Mrs. Cargo presented two beautiful hand-painted cups and sauce* and silver spoons as a parting gift from th» ladici- of the neighbourhood. Mr. Kuigltt responded' on behalf of Mrs. Speer, and Mr,Speer also returned thanks. Light refresh* incuts were handed round during the even-! iug, and dancing was continued until half* past two a.m., when a most enjoyable gathering was concluded by the whole coat* pany singing " Auld Lang Sync."
