A HOTELKEEPER CENSURED.
STRONG REMARKS BY A JUDGE.
[RY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION'.]
Gisbornr, Monday. At the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Justice Edwards, in summing up in a case in which a native was charger 1 with stealing a cheque from the person of James Boyce, proprietor of the Te Raliui Hotel, strongly commented on the conduct of complainant. The judge said there was not much evidence against the accused, although the circumstances might appear suspicious. He thought accused had made a icasonable explanation in regard to the cheque. Personally he advised the jury to acquit the prisoner. His Honor said it was palpable that the complainant was drunk at the time. He certainly would not have been robbed had he l>een sober, as the licensee of an hotel should be. By being drunk he had aided the clime, and put the count.iy to a gieaf expense.
