MOUNT EDEN TRAMWAYS.

THE BOARD AND THE COMPANY. At the ordinary meeting of the Mount Eden Road Hoard, held last evening, Messrs. R. Udy, C. J. Tuiiks, 0. Nicholson, C. Hudson, and R. R. Ross being present, the chairman (Mr. R. Udy) submitted correspondence between the Board and Mr. P. M. Hansen, managing director of the Auckland Electric Tramways Company, relating to the proposed electric tramway service through the Mount Eden district. Mr. Udy having explained the nature of the various conferences held between the Board and Mr. Hansen, particulars of which were published in the Herald of the 29th ult., Mr. Nicholson remarked that tho terms upon which the Tramways Company were prepared to agree to the concession having been fully discussed, a tentative agreement between the Board and the company had been arrived at. In company with members of the Board, Messrs. Hansen, Carey, and Stewart went over the routes and inspected the levels and proposed stopping-places. Correspondence followed, and the outcome, of it was the agreement referred to, made subject to the approval and confirmation of lie company's directors at Home, viz., to construct the lilies on Mount Eden and Mount Roskill Roads, under practically the same conditions as outlined in the report already published in the Herald; but with the addition that Mr. Hansen pointed out that the word "continuous." used in connection with the construction of the linen, was not to be taken to mean "continuous" construction along either of the two routes when once the work had started, " because, for some reason or other we (the company) may find it. necessary, after having started work, say, along Mount Eden Road, to leave this route in the meantime and go on with the Mount Roskill route extension, or vice versa." In regard to concessions to residents, Mr. Hansen was unable to confirm the statement that his company intended making "concessions similar to those received by residents of other districts, since some districts receive now reductions amounting to 25 per cent., which is out of the question for future agreements. However," Mr. Hansen, continued, "my company will, no doubt, make some concession to residents;" but such concessions would not Ik; included in the order-in-council or the deed of delegation. To this the Board replied that- they were agreeable, to enter into the necessary agrenient, and that they quite understood the interpretation to be placed upon the word " continuous." Referring to the matter of "concessions," they understood that the same did not refer to the extraordinary concessions mentioned by Mr. Hansen. All that the Board required were the ordinary abatements to residents. Mr. Nicholson added that ho understood the correspondence between the Board and the company had been forwarded by Mr. Hansen to England by the last mail, and it was expected that confirmation would be given by the London directors in due course. As soon as this was done, and the money was available, the work would be proceeded ; th without delay.
