THE GOLDFIELDS.
GOLDEN BELT G.M. CO. The manager of the Golden Belt Gold Mining Company's mine reports as follows: — The ground in tho low level has been getting harder lately. This level is now in a distance of 1318 ft. The contractor for the battery is making good headway with his work. Good progress is also being made with the watcr-raco and water pipes. NEW UNA G.M. CO. The manager of the New Una Gold Mining Company's mine reports as follows: — The advancing of the main cross-cut was continued during the beginning of the week. In the meantime a portion of the side of tho drive adjacent to No. 3 reef slipped away, bringing a portion of the reef with it. Some strong colours of gold were seen ill the quartz, which is fully 15in wide. I decided to exploit further by driving on it in an easterly direction. This was done, and the reef was taken down on Saturday, when strong colours of gold were seen well distributed through the quartz. I would suggest that a crushing bo taken out from here, as the appearance of the reef is very encouraging, md the country is of tho best description of sandstone. WAIOTAHI G.M. CO. [MY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Wednesday. The whole of the staff of the Waiotahi mine are engaged on the work of tilling in the slope (with the exception of the men working in the shaft), and good progress is being made, with the work, which is expected to be completed on Friday, and a start will then be made on the second stope. The battery is still crushing full time on the quartz on hand, and there will be imfncimt to keep it going until a start is again made at. breaking quartz in the secoud stops. The corrected return for the March clean-ing-up is as follows: 389 tons of ore crushed for a return of retorted gold of 13590z, reduced in melting to 100607,, of the average value of 54s 3d per oz, the total value being £3544. The work of sinking the shaft is still proceeding steadily, and is now down to a depth of Soft below the No. 4 chamber. There is a little improvement in the nature of the country at the bottom, which is not quite so hard, and belter for both boring and shooting, so that better progress should now be made with the work. THE WILBERFORCK REEF, [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS association.] Hokitika, Wednesday. Dr. Bell, Government geologist, is expected here this evening, 'it is likely that his first visit of inspection will be the Wilberforce district, the scene of the recent reef development, which is thought a good deal of locally.
