Cambridge, on Tuesday evening last, when Mr. W. F. Buckiand, WOO JUS announced his intention ol contesting "i" Mayoralty with Mr. Thomas Webs, addressed the burgesses. Mr. John Ferguson was votec j to the chair. Mr. BucWand said every bur-» gess nad a right to stand for the Mayoralty. 1 This was the nrst time in Cambridge that a public meeting had been called to discuss municipal matters. The time had arrivedi in the municipal history of Camundge when men possessing independent opinions suouia be elected to the Council. Air. BucKlanu traced tho -events following bis coming to Cambridge and his previous occupancy oi tno , Mayoral chair. During the three years ol his Mayoralty the total expenses of the council were HJ.IU, an average ot £106 per annum, while the income for the three years amounted to £1957. The expenditure thus exceeded the income by £155. The administration in his time paid every single account before tlie end of the financial year, the bank overdraft standing at £342 Is Bd. against which were a number of assets in the shape of rates, etc. The succeeding Council had the beneht ol £61 subsidy from the Government as a Coronation grant, so that his Council came out with about £15 indebtedness.
