MUNICIPAL COAL DEPOT.

A PETONE PROPOSAL.

[BY TELEGRAPH.OWN" CORRESPONDENT.]

Wellington-, Tuesday. The Borough Council of I'etone has appeared on the scone with a proposal for a municipal coal' depot. A resolution has been passed instructing the engineer to make provision in the alterations now proceeding at the gasworks for sufficient storage accommodation for the purpose of selling coal direct to the residents for cash. The councillor who proposed this motion said there, was no question that; the coal could' be sold cheaper to the people. The net cost of the coal per ton to tho Council would be something like £1 5s 6d. With other expenses, and counting on a minimum sale of two tons per day, Hie cost to the Council would lie about. £1 13s per ton. If the Council sold to the public at Is 9d per cwt it would give 2s per ton profit. That was on a two-ton sale per day basis, but br was assured that in a very short time four and up to eight tons per day would be the quantity sold, and the profits would increase proportionately. There was no doubt whatever that tho departure would result in a big saving to the people of tho borough.
