The negotiations between the Federal Post-master-General (Mr. Sydney Smith) and tho Orient Company h;i?o at last ended in a settlement. This was considered unsuitable, and the Orient; Company's offer was accepted.
lb is probable the weekly service will be resumed below the end of tho month, and if Parliament fails to ratify the new contract! tho old conditions will bo reverted to.
The contract is likely to meet with considerabl* opposition, on the ground that tho amount of subsidy is excessive, the Labour party and a sectiop of tho general Opposition being strongly hostile t« any contract abovo ? £110,000. „.--'• w~ wr l/ 4 Thf Postmaster-General declines- to gjv» details of the contract or .to-state whether any new conditions are involved.
The original tender of the company -was for £140,000. The company will comply with the condition that white labour only] shall he employed on their vessels.
