The Revs. M. Edge and G. Thompton were passengers from Sydney by the Mokoia yesterday.
Mr. W. C. Miller, manager of the Oneliuuga Woollen Mills, is at present on a visit to the South.
Mr. W. H. Grove, the well-known Island merchant, returned from the Cook Islands by the Taviuni on Saturday.
Mr. H. Humphries, Crown Solicitor at Napier, and Miss Humphries, are at present on a visit to Wellington.
Bishop Wallis has licensed the Rev. P. W. Clarkson to the cure of the newly-con-stituted parochial district of Taihape.
Dr. Nutting, who arrived from the North by the Clansman on Friday last, left lor Napier by the Tarawera on Saturday night.
Captain F. W. Hutton, curator of the Christ church museum, who left Wellington by the Rimutaka for London last week, will return in November.
Mr. H. H. Vincent, one of Mr. J. C. Williamson's managerial staff, has retired from business. He and Mrs. \ incent are to tour New Zealand at an early date.
Mr. C. M. L. Potts and Mrs. Potts (nee Miss Blanche Wallace, formerly of Williamson's Musical Comedy Company), ot Sydney, are visitors to Wellington.
Two ex-pupils of the Marlboro gh High School, Messrs. Gordon Bell and Douglas Reed, are leaving Blenheim to enter Edinburgh University as medical students.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wright, of Wyllie's Crossing. Otago, prior to leaving for the South, were presented by the residents of the district with a silver tea and coffee service.
Mr. Jefftics, of the Electric No. 2 dredge. Cromwell. Otago. was recently presented by the members of the crew with a silvermounted pipe and matchbox prior to leaving for South America.
The engagement in marriage of Miss Xoni Richards, daughter of Mr. Harry Rickards, to Mr. Edward Maas, late of the P. and O. Steamship Company, is announced in the Sydney papers.
Captain Backs trom was a passenger by the Haupiri from Wellington on Saturday. He takes charge of the steamer during the absence! of Captain John Campbell, who has been granted holiday leave.
On the 9th inst.. at Sydney. Mr. Charles E. Paterson, a prominent member of the Order of Druids, was farcwellcd by his friends, prior to leaving Sydney to take up his residence in New Zealand.
On Wednesday evening, , at Wadestown. the vicar (the Rev. T. G. Kay) presented Mr. Carwell Cooke (choirmaster) with a purse of sovereigns from his friends. Mr. Cooke is leaving on a trip to Australia.
Mr. J. W. Inglis. F.R.S.E.. of Liberton, Midlothian. Scotland, who has spent the last two years in New Zealand with his wife and daughter, will leave Wellington by the Somerset on his return to the Old Country.
Madam Giradot, widow of Judge Giradot. Litis president of the Supreme Court of Tahiti, with . her three children, arrived from Papeete by the Taviuni on Saturday. They proceed on to Sydney by the Manuka to-day, en route-for France. Mi. J. Wilson, who is leaving on an extended trip to the Old Country, was tendered a farewell conceit and social at- Edendale by the Edendale Young Men s Bible class on Thursday evening. On behalf of the class the Rev. J. M. Eraser presented Mr. Wilson. with a handsome illuminated address. Mr. Evans, formerly of the Poherua, will accompany Captain R. D. Watson, who is to deliver the Rotokino to her new owners in the East. Mr. Chandler, sen., late of the Rose Casev. will go as chief engineer of the Rotokino, "and Mr. Chandler, jun., late of the Rimu. will act as second engineer. The Rotftkino left Port. Chalmers last week for Newcastle. The Anglican Bishop of Auckland. Dr. Neligan, leaves by the Clansman to-day upon a- lour of the northern portion of his diocese. He will be at Mangonui on tie 22nd. at Awanui on the 23rd. at Ahipara on the 24th, at Kaitaia, on the 25th rnd 26th,- at Mangonui on the 27th, at Whangar on the 29th. and at Russell on the 50th. The Bishop returns to Auckland upon the 31st inst. Mr. J. Arnold Kempthorne, who has been acting with the Rev. Beatty, at St. Mark P.emuera. for the past 18 months, was ordained as a priest by Bishop Neligan at the church yesterday morning. The servire was a very impressive one, a fairly large congregation being present. The recentlyordained priest, who is a son of the Rev. J. p. Kempthorne, viCar of Christ Church Cathedral. Nelson, was educated at St. John's College. • A pleasant function took place on Friday last at the warehouse of Messrs. Briscoe and Co., Limited, when a. presentation of a handsome case of cutlery was made to Mr. J.. A. Sheriff, a member of the clerical staff, as a mark of esteem in connection with his recent marriage. Mr. W. J. Bridson made the presentation, referring in a happy speech to the kindly feelings existing between Employers and employees. Mr. Sheriff and his wife were the recipients of hesrtv congratulations from the staff, and the former suitably acknowledged the gift.
