THE WAR.

GENERAL KUROPATKIN RECALLED.

REPORTING TO THE TSAR.

SUCCEEDED BY GENERAL

LINEVITCH.

By Telegraph—Press Association Copyright. London, March 18.

General Kuropatkin has been recalled to St. Petersburg, and General Lineviteh has succeeded him in the command.

The recall of General Kuropatkin has been received in Harbin with a feeling of despair.

(Received March 19, 4.45 p.m.)

London, March 18.

The recall of General Kuropatkin has caused a sensation in Poland, on account of the coldness of the terms in which the official announcement was made.

General Kuropatkin is returning to St. Petersburg to report on the war to the Tsar.

General Lineviteh was promoted to the command in chief at the eleventh hoar. All the generals, including the Grand Duke Nicholas, to whom it was offered, declined the post.

General Sukhoulinoff, however, consented to become chief of staff, ami General Grodekoff goes to the front in an advisory capacity.

The first act of General Linevitch on taking command was to suspend the sending of press telegrams along the wires.

General Gripenberg returns to the front to command the second army.
